I spend a great deal of time thinking about how to develop my work and am always on the lookout for fresh inspiration. Even when on holiday I am always seeking fresh material for my work with most of my holiday snaps destined for the studio rather than the photo album! When actually painting, I tend to work rapidly. By this stage I have generally worked out what I want to achieve with paintings and have usually produced a fairly detailed drawing, on the canvass, from which to work. I work directly from photographs as a rule and therefore, usually, have no need for preparatory drawings. Sean Curley working in his studio Colour, as can be seen when viewing my paintings forms a very important aspect of my work. I like to keep my colours as pure as possible and tend to mix colours only once they are on the actual canvas, if at all. I also find that priming the canvas another colour than white helps me produce a painting of more clarity and purity of both colour and light. The fishing fleets of Dorset, Devon and sometimes further afield, provide me with perfect inspiration for my paintings. Colourful fishing boats provide interesting compositional opportunities with the water and its ever-changing reflective qualities, completing an irresistible photo opportunity from which I can draw inspiration for my paintings later in my studio.
