Terry Freemantle was born in Southampton and lived there until he married and moved to Winchester. On leaving school he trained for five years in the colour separation process of the lithographic printing industry, where he has since spent most of his working life. Considerable artistic skill was a requirement of the job at that time and although it has now been replaced by electronic wizardry, the basic principles learned in the use of colour, tone and contrast contributed much to his later success as a painter.
He formed his own colour reproduction company in 1979 and saw it through the electronic revolution, when the photographic techniques originally used in the process were superceded by the scanner, and the Apple-Mac replaced the brushes in the hands of the image editors. He retired from the business in 1996 in order to devote more time to his freelance graphic design and illustration work, and his painting.
His paintings of local landscapes and buildings were very well received and the range of prints and greeting cards he published from them are very popular. With two calendars, produced for 2000 and 2004, they have led to many commissions and the demand for his work continues at the galleries which show his originals. Most of his output is in watercolour but he also enjoys working in oil and soft pastel.
He now lives with his wife Valerie in a tiny hamlet in the hills of central Portugal, where the clear air and the consistent quality of the light are ideal for the artist. The beautiful countryside and coast are rich sources of inspiration and subjects.
